| Surface & Space This year-long project resulted from the desire to show the volumetric nature of St. Petersburg's urban fabric as a whole, employing multiple vantage points in one drawing. These drawings present a voyage through the city of St. Petersburg: the line of textured façades at the bottom of the images wraps around and |
gives way to the geometric voyage through the courtyards. The ink drawings are punctuated by intrusions/overlayings of "pure" surface in the form of digitally modified photos, and by physical incisions in the pages that frame and lead to views on continuing pages, leading the reader on a visual exploration of the city. |
The drawings are compiled in the book, Surface and Space: Visualizing St. Petersburg, 2004. Publication was made possible by funding from the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship |
